UNDERSTANDING AND TRUSTING YOUR DANCE TEACHER

Updated: Jun 21, 2024

For all of those out there who may be new to dance, you may have questions or not understand why certain things are done or not done. You may not understand where dance has come from and how it actually works. Keeping in mind there are many variables to all choices made by your teachers and studio owners is important to your growth.

As Mr. Ailey said, “Dance came from the people and should be delivered back to the people.” That is what we all try to do. It is more than just steps. It’s the ability to move an audience, to bring joy and confidence, and life skills to children and adults alike. No matter what age you are you need to understand the history and trust that the professionals you are paying, have educated themselves and understand dance as a whole. Many believe that fast movements are challenging and the slow subtlety of a simple arm gesture has no value. I am here to tell you that you are missing the greatest takeaway of this art form. In order to grow as a dancer, as a human we need to keep our minds open and be comfortable with being uncomfortable. There is so much more that goes into your once-a-week class than just giving choreography. The thought of level, style, technique, safety, fun, and ability are all things we dance teachers spend much time and thought on. So, from every dance teacher around the world, we say it louder for those in the back, trust your teachers/studio owners and trust the process, and maybe educate yourself a bit and learn from the professionals who are passionate about helping you to grow.
